Research on retatrutide and fatty liver has drawn attention because of reductions in liver fat reported in a clinical trial. Fatty liver involves a build-up of fat in the liver and is often discussed using the term metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, or MASLD.

What did the retatrutide liver-fat study measure?

A randomised, double-blind phase 2a trial published in Nature Medicine in 2024 included 98 participants with MASLD. It compared investigational retatrutide with placebo and assessed liver fat using MRI-based measurements.

At 24 weeks, 86% of participants in the highest-dose group reached liver fat below 5%, compared with 0% in the placebo group. The threshold and comparison matter: the figure was not an 86% rate of curing every form of liver disease.

Why the result is not a treatment instruction

A liver-fat measurement is not the same as demonstrating reversal of fibrosis or preventing long-term liver complications. This was a small study of a defined investigational product, not evidence that a commercial research pen has the same composition or outcomes.

Lilly currently describes retatrutide as unapproved. The trial findings do not supply a personal dose or make it an available approved MASLD treatment.

Keep current liver care separate from future research

The NHS advises people with fatty liver to work on a balanced diet, regular activity and weight management where appropriate, with clinical assessment and follow-up. A suspected liver problem should be discussed with a GP rather than assessed from weight or symptoms alone.

  • Keep the trial population, measured outcome and follow-up period attached to any statistic.
  • Ask whether a claim concerns liver fat, inflammation, fibrosis or a clinical outcome.
  • Do not replace established care with an investigational compound or an online protocol.
